Should an author have a WordPress website that is self hosted? Meaning it’s not a free WordPress (the WordPress.com version).
It depends. If you mean to just write one book. I think getting a free website like the one I recommended in here is fine. But if you want to stay in this author thing for the long run, it is a good idea to spend $10 a year to get your own domain name, and then pay an additional $3/month for a hosting service. (That's less than a cup of coffee, for goodness' sake.)
It is after all a business, your author business.
Your website is your face to the world. So maybe you want to invest some just so it reflects your brand and what you stand for.
Even if you are not sure if you want to commit to this for the next 7 years—from what I heard that’s how long it takes to be established in the self publishing business—you can always commit for a year and see how it goes.
When I started my Indie publishing business as a self published author I hardly knew what a WordPress site was. Let alone set up my own site. Now I’ve learned quite a bit. And in this video tutorial I walk through for you the steps to set up an WordPress site, and also how to have a capture page on your site. That way when visitors visit your website they have the option to leave their name and email address for you.
In this day and age, having a subscriber list of reader fans can make it or break it for you as a self published author.
The video tutorial also teaches you how to set up a landing page which is a highly useful and cost-saving skill to learn. This could save you hundreds, if not thousands, in your author career. There is another video where I go through setting up an opt in bar and pop up onto the WordPress but start with this basic tutorial. You can click here to watch it.
Also if you are interested in a Wix website builder you can check out my other tutorials on Wix. It's really a no- brainer. You can click here to watch that tutorial.
If for some reason you can’t watch the video tutorial above on my site you can try watching it on my YouTube channel. The URL is listed below.
